Women's Tales: Four Leading Israeli Jewelers
Lecture & Booksigning
BARD GRADUATE CENTER 38 West 86th Street NY 212-501-3011
Jewelers Bianca Eshel-Gershuni, Vered Kaminski (above), Esther Knobel , and Deganit Stern Schocken have each played a major role in forging an Israeli identity in the contemporary jewelry movement that is distinctive from that of Europe and America. While all four jewelers have looked abroad for inspiration and participated in Europe's New Jewelry movement, with its focus on nonprecious materials, their work is uniquely autobiographical, reflecting their roles as women living in Israel. In this forum, Davira S. Taragin, cocurator of the exhibition Women's Tales: Four Leading Israeli Jewelers, organized by The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, and the Racine Art Museum, and Helen W. Drutt English, who contributed an essay to the exhibition catalogue, will discuss how these artists have brought international recognition to a country that has been largely underrecognized for its contribution to contemporary jewelry. This program will conclude with a book signing and reception.

Kiff Slemmons: Beyond Repair
Lecture
SOFA : Park Avenue Armory @ 67th Street, NY
Kiff Slemmons discusses her recent project, "Re:Pair and Imperfection", an exhibition that originated at the Chicago Cultural Center and traveled to Palo Alto and Philadelphia. As a way to explore the idea of the imperfect and acknowledge a perceived need for increased vitality and cross pollination, Slemmons solicited "broken, incomplete, or inconclusive fragments" from artist/jeweler colleagues and made new work from them-"rather like translating one poem into 18 languages." This lecture is presented by the Society of North American Goldsmiths.
